"Are children learning in East Africa? Evidence from the Uwezo surveys"

Abstract

This talk will present preliminary results from the first and second rounds of the Uwezo surveys. These are large-scale, independent household- and school-level surveys that have been administered across East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda) in 2010 and 2011 to evaluate the quality of education outcomes among children aged 6-16. The talk will provide an overview of the surveys, in particular their design, implementation and data quality, as well as some headline analytical results. Broadly speaking, the surveys show that many children remain functionally illiterate throughout primary school.
