"Health Effects from Graduating in a Recession"

Abstract

This paper analyzes the magnitude, dynamics, and sources of long-term health declines associated with graduating during a recession. Using linked register data on the entire cohort of 1990s Swedish graduates, we find that the cost of graduating in a recession is substantial and unequal. Mortality, hospitalization, and disability rates in the following decades are persistently higher for recession graduates, particularly among those with lower levels of education. We explore the roles of income, risky behaviors, mental stress, and marital status as potential mechanisms.
