EduQuant seminar: The effect of mentoring

Join EduQuant’s seminar, where Sven Resnjanskij from University of Erfurt, will present his paper "Can Mentoring Programs Alleviate Family Disadvantage in Adolescence?".

Abstract

We study a mentoring program that aims to improve the labor-market prospects of school-attending adolescents from disadvantaged families by offering them a university-student mentor. Our RCT investigates program effectiveness on three outcome dimensions that are highly predictive of later labor-market success: math grades, patience/social skills, and labor-market orientation. We further investigate the persistence of treatment effects after the school-to-work transition and potential mechanisms that explain the effects. In the second part of the presentation, we analyze program dropout. Using machine learning algorithms, we predict individual dropout risks of program participants and derive policy implication for program providers to boost expected program returns.
