The EU faced with global challenges – can we still cope?
Some lessons from the last half-century
The European Union has to a large extent been shaped by its ability to respond to crises (Jean Monnet), some of external origin. The current challenge is the fourth coming from the US since the global monetary system broke in 1968-73. Then - as in reacting to the Reagan policy mix in 1981-5 and to the financial crisis from 2007-8 - the EU did, after a painful learning period, adjust its complacent macroeconomic and financial framework while deepening market integration. The latest challenge is sharper, involving major geopolitical and security issues, while the starting position of several EU economies and the joint governance framework both remain vulnerable. Nevertheless, past experience suggests that the required adjustments may not be beyond reach.
Niels Thygesen er æresmedlem af Nationaløkonomisk Forening og en af sin generations mest indflydelsesrige europæiske økonomer. Han fylder 90 år den 13. december 2024. I den anledning indbyder Økonomisk Institut, Københavns Universitet og Nationaløkonomisk Forening til foredrag med efterfølgende diskussion og reception.
